Notes to Nadiya

The Challenge

Create a visual learning resource to educate children aged 7-11 about the war in Ukraine.

The Insight

We cannot shield children from current events as they will likely see information online or through social media.

The Goals

Goal 1: Provide a human-centred tool that is educational and engaging.

Goal 2: Encourage open conversation and create a safe space for children.

Ideas

I developed the idea of creating an app for educational purposes. The app was trialled with children aged 7-11, early years specialists and parents.

The Solution

I created an app which follows a Ukrainian character called Nadiya and her family.

Notes to Nadiya reflects community values and is a sanctuary for children to speak openly about their thoughts on the war in Ukraine.

My Role: I developed an illustrative style and characters to educate children through story and play. Storylines include information about Ukrainian culture and history.

My Goal: Create memorable and engaging information. The use of illustration and characters keeps the child engaged without creating fear.

My Role: I conducted thorough research on Ukraine. I spoke to historians and real Ukrainian families to convey their stories accurately.

My Goal: Ensure factual and non-biased information.

My Role: I refined the communicative aspect of Notes to Nadiya by creating a page where children can write to the main character, Nadiya, and ask any questions they may have.

My Goal: Include children in the conversation while creating an efficient, safe and educational space.

“The app helps young children to make sense of a difficult subject and helps to support their social and emotional needs” – Early Years Specialist

The Impact

My research taught me that there are three steps to creating a safe space for a child

Display the facts

Allow questions

Find a solution

Notes to Nadiya covers these steps in the following way:

1. Display the facts: History pages and news articles.

2. Allow questions: There is a question and answer page – children can write to Nadiya and ask questions they may have after reading the news articles and stories.

3. Find a solution: Children enjoy being able to help. The app includes a recipe book where they can find traditional Ukrainian recipes to raise charity funds. Resources in the app include printable posters and educational materials for parents and teachers.

Notes to Nadiya overall positively changes our behaviour of how we talk to children about subjects which they may find scary or confusing.
